Liberals give support to Toxteth DISC
Liberal Party Leader Steve Radford attended a public meeting by students and teachers concerned with future of adult education in Liverpool ,due to the shift in funding to under 25 age group.
At the meeting Cllr Radford advised students to utilise the right to petition the city council to as a way to seek publicity
The Liberal Party has also been in touch with students from the DISC Centre under threat in Toxteth, these are a few of the ponts they make concerning the centre and its courses:
Of current excess of hundred students approx 70 % are over 19 years old
Most of current students because of disability , transport and parenting duties would be unable to relocate to Bankfield Site, which already has congestion problems
Many of city centre courses in the city centre do not provide equivalent courses during day time
Liberal Party Councillors have tabled a motion to the city council trying to gather support the Toxteth DISC and its students in one of the most disadvantaged communities in Liverpool

Liberals Call on Government Office to take action over billboard of dereliction at Prescot Road and Prescot Drive, Fairfield
Today Mark Forbes of the Government Office NW has asked us if we would happy our complaint of persistent delays, procrastination and negligence was made known to the city council - no surprise on the reply - of course everything we say is upfront
We have immediately written back pointing out the working parties which are either cancelled . postponed or never convened in the first place, by Councillor Doran.
When these rare events take place, we are told about the need for another brief.
Clearly the role of the special contract whereby all significant sites within the HMRI area ,are given first option to one of four builders ,who have a prime interest in demolition and new build rather than renovation, is actually adding to delays and blocking private companies with a proven record on renovation bing brought in.
Clearly the Liberal belief in the benefits of competition never infiltrated the Social Democrats of the SDP/Lib Democrats

Dear Editor
We are delighted to hear that the police will object to any attempt to reopen the First Base licensed premises at Townsend Lane, in the Anfield part of our Ward
However what is disconcerting is that despite residents complaints it was an act of criminal arson which closed this venue ,rather than the authorities acted upon intelligence
Even more problematic is that there is a current attempt an almost 24 hour off license at 15 Townsend Lane> Knowing the extensive anti social and vandalism incidents in the immediate area we have written to both Walton Lane and Tuebrook Police Inspectors urging them object to this application .
We hope the Police will support our objections rather than await more incidents rather than acting to prevent the predictable problems aggravating known difficulties in Townsend Lane

Parks Scrutiny Panel Visits Croxteth Park Wednesday 20th June:
Attending the Parks Scrutiny Panel today (20th June)
Liberal Party Councillor Steve Radford called for a more proactive role by the city council in ensuring properties around the parks , which are leased out by the city council, are kept in both occupancy and a quality state of repair.
Quoting Newsham Park Cllr Steve Radford said the city council's estates role had been negligent and allowed many sites with a direct view of the park fall into dilapidation. The more people living with a view on the parks is in many ways the best security we could provide
He also urged more work be done in extending natural woodlands in the Parks.
The work of the Parks Scrutiny panel will be reported into the Enviroment Committee on 28th June , 17.00 at Millenium House

HMRI Scrutiny Panel : Welcomed by Liberal Opponents of HMRI

Dear Editor
It is too often the norm in politics for oppositions to knee jerk oppose policies or decisions of the ruling party
We in the Liberal Party have always tried to focus on the merits or disadvantages of any issue, in a spirit of constructive opposition.
In that context ,may we welcome the recommendation of the new Housing Scrutiny Committee Chairman, Cllr Firth, to propose a scrutiny panel to look at the HMRI policy, its implementation and impact.
It is without doubt in our minds, as the Political Group that has focused opposition to the excess demolitions, that this policy was written for a housing market relevant to a decade ago and which bears no reflection to the current market
Furthermore we have seen dysfunctional lack of diversity and lack of competition, due to the effective monopoly of four national builders on their respective slices of the city
HMRI has also led to the blocking of regeneration of various derelict buildings and land sites outside the inner city
Whether the sheer fact this committee has been established shows a "wind of change" ,or just a PR excersise to justify the current policies will yet to be seen..
However we welcome it and urge all those who are questioning the current HMRI policies to seize this opportunity in good faith

Community Engagement Meeting - Future Tuebrook
- Future of Carlton Cinema and former Venue Site, Green Lane, Tuebrook
5.00 at The Hope Centre , Snaefell Ave - Thursday 21st June
Following an extensive campaign led by the Liberal Party, local residents overturned the council and government policy to block Housing Development at the Green Lane site of the former Venue Nightclub
Whilst we were disappointed redevelopment did not immediately follow, no doubt the granting of planning approval has encouraged the new owners to look at options for both the Venue and Carlton Cinema
They are looking at plans to put at ground level a significant retail unit with approx 120 apartments above.
On site parking should cater for 75% car to apartment ratio's.
The site owners are also planning for an on-site gym to encourage large numbers of professional and young people ,who may not want to pay city centre rents, to move in. Approximately 75% apartments will be two bed rooms and 25% single bed.
Of course this site is ideal for excellent frequent bus routes to the city centre ,10-15 minutes drive away, with a traditional community shopping centre on the doorstep. Popular single sex schools at Holly Lodge and West Derby Boys reflect the communities fierce defense of good schools against past reorganisations
This is the second community engagement meeting prior to formal application being made
This is another positive outcome of The Liberal Party's positive reputation of working with commercial development companies and the local community to improve housing , retail and community facilities

Dear Editor
We have inspected the current summary of Merseyside Transport Authority plans till 2011 with some alarm.
When residents of Anfield and surrounding communities being persuaded to support building a new Stadium on Stanley Park ,we were led to believe the Bootle Branch railway line from Edge Hill, running through Tuebrook, Clubmoor, Anfield and Walton would reopened for passenger traffic.
This was an essential element to cope with the additional 20,00 capacity. Now that it is an open objective to add a further 35,000 to the stadium capacity, the need for a proper rail link is even greater
Therefore we were shocked that the published Transport plans till 2011 are silent on this commitment
We urge all in authority to rectify this apparent omission

Dear Editor
The support for extensive demolition of homes is justified in that people want better homes
This begs the question whether the new homes are any significantly better, after taking into account the horrendous costs involved in purchase, legal challenges, demolition and rebuilding
Can I quote some recent points made by an expert in Urban Environmental Design :-
"The average size of a new property in the UK today is 30% less than it was in 1920 and while the average size of a new property here is just 815 sq ft (76sq m)
- barely 15% larger than the basic flats built in Communist East Germany before 1990
- the average size of a new property in Australia and the United States is approximately 2,200 sq ft (over 200sq m), while in Europe it is around 90 sq m.
In fact we live in the smallest properties in Western Europe, but pay some of the highest prices for doing so."
If anyone has any doubt about the benefit of new housing being built I invite readers to view the new build properties in Norris Green , Liverpool, which have all the design hallmarks of a later day legoland

Authortarian Drift of New Labour - Letter by Cllr Chris Lenton
18 Kerman Close
Liverpool
L12 5NH
To the Editor (For Publication)
For some reason the authoritarian drift of the government still shocks me as it seems no form of intrusion or indoctrination is out of the question for New Labour. Their latest scheme is for a short period of
forced community labour for all teenagers apparently to aid them in their appreciation of being British. The New Labour view of citizenship is nothing more than indoctrination in politically correct ideology. How convenient for Gordon Brown to answer the West Lothian question and the disenfranchisement ofEngland by appeals to a phoney British identity. In the shallow world of NewLabour traditions and national holidays might be manufactured but out in old England we can tell the latest tat from the ad men motivated by party political advantage.
Why should anyone have faith in the good intentions of politicians who say they value this country and its institutions at the sametime, as they are about to subvert our ancient constitution to a new pan-European treaty without any form of democratic mandate? These are the same people who think that we don’t need a general election despite the PM indicating he would be in office for a full term. All of this shows that at present we have officeholders without a shed of decency or any commitment to established precedents or liberties. New Labour has no concept of the nation and its governing habits other than as their private fiefdom.
Yours sincerely,
Cllr Chris Lenton, Liverpool Liberal Party.
This letter was kindly published in the Daily Telegraph and others

Key Routes into City wrecked by Council Policies - Open Letter to Press

Dear Editor
We have just read the Executive Board Report (8th June Look of The City)
describing the need to improve the view of nine key routes into the city.
That really is ironical ,as it is the city council and its mad cap policies that are turning many parts of the city into a billboard of dereliction
Firstly Edge Lane, despite countless court injunctions the council and its partners refuse to look at alternative schemes to improve and renovate properties on Edge Lane, the vast majority which are not in the way of a roadway realignment. The boarding up and possible demolition invariably needless.
Secondly, on West Derby Road the council has repeatedly failed to tackle congestion and flooding on the West Derby Road/Muirhead Avenue Roundabout, demanded by Local Councillors, residents and traders
Thirdly, on Prescot Road , despite endless press releases the houses opposite the Police Club , Fairfield remain derelict and private developers are actually being turned away by this inept council
Lastly on the East Lacs Road planners have objected to building apartments on the former Crown Pub/Dickie Lewis's as part of the council's HMRI policy ,which strangles redevelopment outside the inner city
The wastelands of dereliction in this city are not due to the hand of God, nor due to market forces, but the result of socialist type policies combined with the dead hand of council bureaucracy.
Before wasting more council tax payers money ,they should get their own house in order by jettisoning HMRI

Venue and Carlton Site, Green Lane Initial Discussions;
On Thursday 7th June Liberal Party Councilors and a panel of leading local residents are to meet the new owners who have bought both the Carlton Cinema Site and former Venue nightclub. The meeting is at 5.00 at the Hope Centre, Snaefell Avevenue and we are seeking to encourage the redevelopment of the site for Housing.
Liberal Party Councillors and residents previously fought a fierce battle to overturn Labour Government policy to block housing outside the inner city which would have left the site derelict for decades
