Liberal Democrat Steve Hurst fails to overturn conviction for breaking election law

By David Bartlett on Apr 7, 09 04:22 PM

stevehurst250.jpg

Liverpool Lib Dem councillor Steve Hurst has failed in his appeal to overturn a conviction for breaking election law.

Today judge Mark Brown said: "This sort of conduct brings considerable discredit on his party and local politicians in general, at a time when politicians are under the spotlight as never before.

"This was dirty tactics of the worst kind."

Hurst was convicted of delivering a leaflet titled "Walton Scab," attacking sitting Labour councillor Pauline Walton and her firefighter husband Keith in December.

Masquerading as a leaflet from The United Socialist Party (TUSP), the pink flier accused Mr Walton of crossing a Fire Brigades Union picket line during a strike.

Mrs Walton was accused of leaving council meetings early to learn lap dancing.
And it said Mr Walton was so unpopular at Lee Park golf course he couldn't find a playing partner.

The Wavertree councillor also stood down from his position on Liverpool's ruling executive board.

The above report featured in the Daily Post, this illegal malpractice has been routine by the Lib Dems for may years, what is refreshing is that at long last Merseyside Police have acted to expose, rather than cover up for the Lib Dems.In Tuebrook and Clubmoor Wards lib dem election leaflets often carried dishonest references claimed to be made by me. To prevent civil legal action the legal imprint was not carried but police only issued a warning once

New poll reveals 62% of Dutch people think EU institutions are a "waste of taxpayers' money

Dear Editor

No one can say the dutch aren't not interationalist
or tolerant, however we must agree with the latest poll findings from Holland

A poll in the Netherlands by the University of Amsterdam has revealed that 62 per cent of Dutch people think that the EU institutions are a "waste of taxpayers' money"; less than 24 percent have trust in the EU and more than two thirds are opposed to enlargement, with an expert commenting: "the research shows that the campaign for the EU elections will be held in a country which is a lot more eurosceptic than at the time of the previous elections in 1999 or 2004".

Clearly we in Britain are not alone

On City Talk Cllr Steve Radford was invited to review the
newspapers (monday  6th April) with host Dean Sullivan

He made a rapid series of topical points including

The rapid erosion of the Royal Mail and Post Office network was being driven by EU competition rules

That anti -terrorism laws were being abused by government to silence legitimate political and peaceful protests

That ID cards would do little to tackle crime in working class communities and the money would be far better spent on employing more community police

He also argued that the gradual introduction of ID cards would lead to a compulsory scheme sooner or later

Steve also made it clear The Liberal Party had no association with the Lib Dems who were destroying playing fields ,building on parks and demolishing terraced communities, policies The Liberal Party avidly opposed
