Sir,
We in the Liberal Party welcome the debate on constitutional reform sparked by the MP's expenses scandal. Indeed, some of the proposals being raised, such as fixed term parliaments and an elected upper house, reflect long standing Liberal Party policy.
We are surprised, however, to hear Nick Clegg, leader of the 'Liberal' Democrats speaking about democratic accountability. It was, after all, LibDem MPs who conspired with the Labour government to deny the people a referendum over the Lisbon treaty, breaking a manifesto commitment and their promise to the electorate in one go.
It is the LibDems who would hand over more and more of our powers to an unelected and unaccountable European commission. They would join the Euro, handing over economic sovereignty to unelected bankers. Hardly the policies of a party commited to increasing democratic accountability.
Yours faithfully,
DANIEL WOOD
Chair of the Policy Committee,
The Liberal Party
